Coach Marchiano

Head Coach

Coach Marchiano joined the Sparta High School coaching staff from Jefferson Township High School.  He coached both football and baseball at Jefferson for four years. Coach Marchiano also played high school football at Jefferson where he was All SCIL, All-County, and All-Area Player. At the College of New Jersey, he was a four-year starter and was selected as an All-New Jersey Athletic Conference Player his senior year.  Marchiano majored in Law and Justice.  He received his teaching certification from William Patterson University. Marchiano teaches Health and Physical Education at SHS and is also a Boys track coach. In 2011, he was honored by the NJ Herald as Coach of the Year. His 2011 squad also earned Team of the Year by the NJ Herald, went undefeated in regular season play and won their division title. He lives in Lafayette with his wife, Shannon, and children: Gianna, Frank, Jr, and Dominic.

Assistant Coach

Coach Hast is from Pittsburgh, PA and attended Chartiers Valley HS. He continued to Columbia University, earning a BA in 1967. He is a graduate of UCONN and MAEJ and is retired from the United States Secret Service. He has taught at Penn Hills HS and Kennedy Catholic. He has coached at schools such as UCONN, Penn Hills HS, Pope John HS, and Morris Catholic HS. At Sparta, Coach Hast coaches the corners and running backs. He and his wife, Susan, have three children: Jake, Meghan and Alexandra.

Assistant Coach

Coach Higgins works with the tight ends, defensive ends, and special teams. He graduated from Massapequa H.S. in Massapequa, NY in 1992 and went on to play football, as a tight end for the Seahawks, at Wagner College in Staten Island; graduating in 1996.  After graduation, Coach Higgins worked as a graduate assistant coach for St. Peter’s College from 1996-1997. In 2001-2002 he was the assistant football & lacrosse coach for Poly Prep H.S.  in Brooklyn NY.  He serves as a Police Officer with the Port Authority of NY & NJ and lives in Sparta with his wife, Maureen, and daughters Maggie & Delaney.

Assistant Coach

Defensive Coordinator Kappelmeier rejoined Sparta HS’s coaching staff in 2011. He has a long history of coaching high school football with past positions as Assistant Coach at Pope John HS (1986‐1992, 2008‐2010), Sparta HS (1993‐1994, 2005‐2007, 2011‐present), High Point Regional HS (2003‐2004), and as the Head Coach at High Point Regional HS (1995‐2002). He Received an engineering degree from the Catholic University of American and his Master’s Degree in engineering from Princeton University. He has taught Physics and Calculus at Pope John, County College of Morris, Sussex County Community College, and High Point Regional HS. He and his wife, Raquel, have three children; John, Lauren, and Maddie.

Assistant Coach

Coach McCartney attended Jefferson Township H.S. where he played football, basketball, and track.  He graduated from East Stroudsburg University is in his fourth year teaching at Sparta, and third year coaching football.  Coach McCartney also coaches spring track and field.

Assistant Coach

Coach Windt is the offensive and defensive line coach.  He is a retired science and math supervisor and chemistry and physics teacher. He received his Bachelor Degree from Montclair State College and Master Degree from NJIT. Windt was the head coach at Kittatinny High School for seven years, and assistant coach for 32 years at Kinnelon HS, Kittatinny HS, Hopatcong HS, Pope John HS, and Sparta HS. He resides in Hopatcong with his wife, Jamie.

Freshman Coach

Coach Procopio is a 2005 graduate of Indian Hills High School.  He was an All-County, All-NJIL, and All-Area wrestler as well as All-NJIL in baseball.  Coach Procopio played baseball at Springfield College for four years and power-lifted for two years.  He majored in in Applied Excercise Science and has a Masters degree in Physical Education.  Coach Procopio also has a Personal Training Certificate from the NSCA and has interned at the College of the Holy Cross and Parisi’s Speed School.

Freshman Coach

Coach Finland graduated from Hopatcong High School in 2001 where he was a varsity athlete in football, wrestling, and track & field.  While attending East Stroudsburg University he continued to play football and participate in track & field.  Coach Finland also played semi-professional football with the New Jersey Wolves out of Plainfield, NJ.  He adds competitive power lifting to his resume as he has competed in multiple world and national championships and still competes in Strongman for North American Strongman Corporation.  Prior to joining the S.H.S. football coaching staff, Coach Finland’s career included coaching Randolph football, and  Randolph, Sparta &  Morris Knolls wrestling.    He also has experience coaching girls track & fields as a throwing coach and has attained seven straight state sectional titles.  Coach Finland presently resides in Hopatcong with his wife, Nicole, and twin boys Andrew & Jason.
